World Book Day 2023

It’s that special day of the year that we all love…. World Book Day!

This year it celebrates its 25th anniversary and the theme is make it ‘your’ World Book Day.

UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) organised the first World Book Day to “recognise the power of books to change our lives for the better”. In other countries it is celebrated on the 23rd April but that’s St Georges Day in England so the second Thursday of March was chosen instead.

Why read?

We are all encouraged to read at school but some of you may prefer gaming, or footie, or dancing or watching films. What are the benefits of reading? It gives you some time to escape from your real life and immerse yourself in your imagination. Unlike films, which provide us a with visuals, when we read a book it is in our imagination. This means we can make it what we want with the use of the descriptions provided by the author.

Dressing up as a book character is always on the agenda, but there are other things you could do to celebrate….

Read a book

Read a comic or graphic novel

Write a book review

Swap a book with someone

Visit your local library

Read out loud

Design a book cover

Give someone one of your old books

Visit a charity shop and buy a new book

Make up your own characters and build them a story
