Some History behind Pride

Pride flags in the air

Some history…

The Stonewall Riots, also called the Stonewall Uprising, began in the early hours of 28th June 1969 when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a bar in Greenwich Village, New York City, which served the LGBTQ+ community.

At the time, homosexual acts remained illegal in every state except Illinois. Bars and restaurants could be closed down for having employees who identified as gay or serving people who identified as gay.

The raid caused riot's with customers and neighbourhood residents as police removed employees and customers out of the bar, leading to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement.

Police raids on bars who served LGBTQ+ people were incredibly common at the time, but on that particular night, members of the city’s LGBTQ+ community decided to fight back.

The Stonewall Riots are a key milestone for the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBTQ+ rights.

The message was clear: protestors demanded the establishment of places where they could go and be open about their LGBTQ+ identity  without fear of arrest.
